I had the privilege of joining the Up Your Smile Game Podcast with Dr. Brigitte White presented by Bright Whites Oral Care, where they celebrate Black women leaders and founders in the wellness space and honor their journeys to create a more equitable society. During this episode, I shared the inspiration behind my journey into pediatric dentistry and the challenges I’ve faced as a practice owner. I also emphasized the critical role of mentorship and racial representation in our profession, highlighting how these elements are essential in addressing disparities in oral health.

DENTISTRY TODAY – ARTICLE BY DR. HISHAW

The traditional path to becoming a dental professional has often been limited to a narrow demographic. However, to truly address the oral health disparities in underserved communities, we must challenge this status quo and actively seek to diversify our dental workforce. By doing so, we can ensure that our dental workforce is reflective of the diverse populations we aim to serve. But where will these much-needed practitioners come from? I strongly believe that the solution to this pressing issue lies in mentorship and collaboration.


One Degree, Countless Opportunities

When graduates leave the UMKC School of Dentistry, they’re ready for the rigors thatcome with working inside a dental clinic. But they’re also prepared for a multitude of other opportunities where they can put their degrees to work. Alumni Laila Hishaw, William V. Giannobile and Nathan Suter may have taken their knowledge in different directions, but they all share the common goal of making a lasting impact on the field of dentistry.
